What is a Low Residue Diet?

A low residue diet is very similar to but more restrictive than a low fiber diet. It is used in preparation for medical examinations and to aid mostly stomach related health conditions during flare-ups, but is sometimes recommended for:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy to the bowel area
  • Preparation for a space flight

The most common reason your doctor recommends this diet for you is to reduce the size and frequency of your stools. It is usually used for a short period of time because if used long term it can cause vitamin and mineral deficiencies because of the low fruit and vegetable intake.

All foods that are on this diet have to be low in fiber. Below you'll find a list that I have compiled.

What to Eat

Breads & Starches:

  • Cereal
  • Potatoes without peels
  • Refined crackers
  • Regular white pasta, macaroni or noodles
  • White bread
  • White rice, couscous or farina

Dairy (no more than 2 cups per day of the following:

  • Milk
  • Yoghurt
  • Pudding
  • Cheese

Fruits & Vegetables:

  • Fruit juices without pulp
  • Canned fruit
  • Cooked fruit such as apricots, applesauce and peaches

Protein sources (tender meat such as):

  • Fish
  • Poultry
  • Eggs
  • Tofu

Fats:

  • Butter
  • Margarine
  • Mayonnaise
  • Salad dressing (without seeds)

 

What to Avoid

  • Brown rice
  • Coconut
  • Crunchy peanut butter
  • Dairy products that contain nuts, seeds, fruit or vegetables
  • Nuts
  • Pickles
  • Popcorn
  • Raw fruits and vegetables (except those allowed)
  • Seeds
  • Whole grain products
