The Causes of Colon Pain

Are you experiencing colon pain?

There are usually many different causes of sharp stomach pains or other related problems.

First things first, you should see a doctor immediately if you've been experiencing:

1. Rectal bleeding
2. Severe Weight-loss
3. Pain has lasted for more than 7-8 hours
4. Pain that gets worse when you move
5. High fever
6. Inability to move your bowels and/or urinate
7. Extreme pain
8. Vomiting frequently
9. Severe Diarrhea

Sharp pains in your abdomen are usually serious signs, if it keeps happening several times a day, something is wrong, and a visit to the doctor's office is recommended.

If you're experiencing intense colon pains, listen to your body, go and see a doctor, too often people ignore these messages and hope it will just go away on its own.

There are many organs located around your stomach, the pain can be related to an entirely different organ, such as the ovary, bladder or liver.

I remember when I had stomach pains (not acute) and I went to the doctor, he asked me:

  • Where did you first feel the pain?
  • How long have you had it?
  • What were you doing when it started?
  • Have you tried anything to make it better?
  • Have you had this before?
  • Is it a dull or sharp pain?
  • Does the pain move around?
  • Do you take any medication?
  • Do you have any medical issues or illnesses?
  • Do you smoke, drink or do drugs?
  • Do you feel nauseous?
  • Have you vomited, had diarrhea? (and so on...)

These are very basic questions that he will ask you, think about them so you have well thought out answers, because they can be crucial for the doctor to find what the problem is.

After he has asked you these questions he will most likely press a little bit on your stomach with his hands to try and locate the pain.

He can then send you home telling you to eat better or let you go through some physical exams like blood tests, stool analysis, x-rays or colonscopy, the list is long :-).

The Causes of Colon Pain

Many diseases can cause stomach pains. Diseases and causes doctor's think about are:

  • Ulcers
  • Infections
  • Food poisoning
  • Appendicitis
  • Gallblader disease
  • Liver complications
  • Pancreas inflammation
  • Kidney stones
  • Crohn's disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Colon cancer

Don't get worried if you've never had any serious illnesses, it is most likely something else in your case, although it can sometimes be a more serious issue, that's why a visit to the doctor is wise.

Relief

If you're just experiencing some minor colon pain, there are some home remedies you can use and see if they help.

  1. Bananas & Mineral Water
This is one that I stumbled upon myself when I had trouble with a quesy stomach. I drank a little bit of mineral water and ate a banana and I would get relief.

  2. Tea
Drinking tea can alleviate stomach pain, you should feel relief in a few hours, if it works.

  3. Antacids
I don't like this option but if nothing else works it doesn't hurt to try taking some antacids and see if that helps, if the pain keeps coming back, go and see your doctor.

  4. Lay on your left side
Eating some fruits and laying on your left side has by many been reported as an effetive home remedy, you might want to try it, I do it if I have eaten too much and it helps :)

  5. Take a bath
Taking a warm bath can help you relax and alleviate stomach pain.

And that's it, the most important thing is to relax and don't panic if something comes up. If it doesn't go away, go and see your doctor.
