Symptoms of Constipation

Symptoms of constipation can sometimes be hard to define. In a study1, it was determined that "Definition of chronic constipation by infrequent bowel movements alone is of little value; the symptom 'necessity to strain' is much better suited".

Still, you and I both know that going several days without a bowel movement can get really uncomfortable, but what the study means is that the best indicator is the necessity to strain.

The normal range is anything from three bowel movements per day to one every two or three days.

I've always had at least one bowel movement a day for most of my life, and recently when I've begun eating better and done a few herbal colon cleanses I've had up to three bowel movements a day.

The most common symptoms are:

  • Hard stools
  • Dry stools
  • Small stools
  • Excessive straining
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Stomachaches that are relieved by bowel movements
  • No bowel movement for three days (four days in children)
  • Leaks of wet diarrhea like stool between bowel movements

If you see any of the following signs you should contact your doctor:

  1. If you begin experiencing fever and lower abdominal pain in conjunction with constipation.
  2. If you notice blood in your stool.
  3. You are losing weight (if you aren't dieting).
  4. You experience severe pain with bowel movements.

Constipation is a funny thing, it can mean different things to different people, so I urge you to notice how your body reacts.

Pay attention to what foods you have eaten lately, any processed junk food in there?

Not enough fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods?

Foods are the cause of constipation in the overwhelming majority of cases, and it can also be the cure.
